The Saint (part 2)

I have changed and revised some parts of the sculpt, and I have added a rather simple base. I rejected the idea of building an ammunition belt (in the appropriate size...) thus he is now armed with some kind of "hand-mounted-psylencer" or any other strange weapon that needs no bullets... Part three will be the painted version....hopefully.

My latest sculpt, a Grey-Knight Spacemarine. It stands about 30 mm tall and was sculpted with Milliput, Green-Stuff and some lead and plastic sheet.

Besides Games-Workshop´s miniatures and artwork I was mainly inspired by a great miniature from David Waeselynck.

A 28mm Empire State Trooper. It´s based on Games-Workshop´s plastic State Troopers. My intention was to create a rather young, brave but also pretty naive soldier.

It´s been quite a long time since I started working on this knight (christmas 2009) but finally I have found enough time and motivation to finish the piece.
It took a while until I had decided on a colour scheme and in the end I choose to go away one step from the fantasy references I used towards a more historical approach. The result can perhaps be described as a "fantasy-interpretation of an historical character"....however the taints of chaos have been inevitable...

So, the person depicted is "Georg der Reiche, Herzog von Bayern-Landshut" ("George the Rich, duke of Bavaria-Landshut"). He lived from 1455 to 1503 and is mainly popular due to his lavish marriage with Hedwig Jagiellonica (daughter of the polish King, Kasimir IV) in 1475, an event still celebrated by the citizens of Landshut (The headline is something like a mission statement used during this time).
Besides that I like this historical period and had already consulted pictures of armour from this time during the sculpting process I found the duke´s heraldry suitable.
Both painting and sculptingwise I consider it not my best work yet in regard of the amount of time invested into this figure it has definitely been the most ambitious project for me up to now and I am pretty happy and even more relieved to have it away from my desk.

It is my first sculpt in that scale based on my own concept. It was inspired by an artwork of Bretonnian heraldry (Warhammer Fantasy).

Some thoughts on painting the figure:

At first, I didn´t use sprays for basecoating the sculpt but went for a brush to apply a black basecoat (elf flesh/GW for the face). I did this as I was pretty sure that I would break some details during the painting process.
I divided the figure into segments (face, armour, clothing, cloak, hat) and finished painting each single segment before moving on to the next.

I started with the face. After the acrylic basecoat (elf flesh/GW) had cured I went on using oil colours. I mixed a middle tone from flesh tint, burnt umber and burnt sienna, for the lights I added more and more titanium white, for the shades burnt umber. Especially to enhance the cheeks I also added a small portion of english red to the base colour. (All oil colours I use are from the "Schmincke Mussini" range) After the colours had completely dried I had to resculpt the beard as I wanted to cover a larger area of the upper lip, afterwards I painted the beard with acrylics.

For the armour I first applied several layers of diluted boltgun metal(GW), I then washed all areas with an highly diluted mix of dark green and brown ink(GW). To define the light and shaded areas I applied some layers of babad black(GW) for the shades and quite a lot of thin layers of silver(Vallejo)for the lights.
The next step was to enhance the shades by applying undiluted black oil paint to the shaded areas. Finally after the oil paint had cured I painted the reflexion lines using again silver(Vallejo). This was done very carefully and was generally fairly similar to painting non metallic armour.

After I had finished all metallic parts I went for the fabrics. All white parts were done with dheneb stone, graveyard earth, bleached bone and skull white(GW), all red parts with red gore, catachan green, blood red and vomit brown(GW). To obtain some kind of texture I painted many thin horizontal lines, in particular on the light areas.

The hat was painted using the following colours: scorched brown, bestial brown, snakebite leather and bleached bone(GW). Eventually it recieved a wash of highly diluted burnt umber.
The feathers on the hat were realized using the same colours as for the textiles yet for obtaining a slightly texturized surface I also applied undiluted oil colours to some prominent areas of the feathers.

Finally the base was painted with acrylics and recieved several oil washes (mainly green and brown tones). The severed head was painted with titanium white, black, and vandyke brown over a grey acrylic basecoat. The blood was realized with black oil colour and X-27 clear red(Tamiya).

It started without a clear concept, eventually it turned out to be some kind of renaissance fencing master with a strong touch of "fantasy".

It is heavily inspired by Kostas Kariotellis interpretation of Vlad Dracula.

Further references mainly were Warhammer Fantasy artworks and late medieval german gothik armour.

Crusader Knight 75mm (Romeo Models)

Although, or perhaps exactly because, these figure of a crusader knight greatly sculpted by Victor Konnov is kept rather simplistic, it is among the best miniatures of these era which are currently available on the market, at least in my humble opinion.

Preparation:

Casting and fit of the individual parts was good, thus preparation of the figure was limited to removing some mould lines and filling up some few gaps. Moreover I removed the pre-sculpted cross on the chest and added a small, brass-etched cross to the belt.

After the miniature had been built (expect for the shield) and had been attached to the base I started painting.

After all the white-metallic parts had been polished and afterwards masked, I covered the entire miniature with skull white spray (Citadel).

Painting:

The face first received a basecoat of acrylic colour (pallid flesh/ Citadel) and was than treated with the oil colours titanium opaque white, flesh tint, natural burnt umber, natural burnt sienna, English red and ivory black (Schmincke, “Mussini”).

All white-metallic parts received several thick washings with the oil colours ivory black and Vandyke brown (Schmincke, “Mussini”). After these washings had cured I enhanced the deepest shadows with undiluted black oil colour.

The coat of arms and the shield received an acrylic basecoat of space wolf grey (Citadel) upon which I continued working with the oil colours titanium opaque white, royal blue deep and vandyke brown (Schmincke, “Mussini”). For diluting the oil colours I normally use odourless turpentine though I tend to thin the colours as less as possible, as these eases the control of the colours and makes them dry less fast. For creating the blue colour tone I mixed four colours on my palette (one part white + one part blue, blue, three parts blue + one part brown, one part blue + one part brown). Taking into account a zenital light source I applied the fitting colours to the light and shadow areas of the fabric and blended them at the margins by executing a “dabbing” brush movement. At that point it is crucial not to blend any colour containing brown with one containing white. Furthermore it is helpful to divide the coat of arms into segments and to finish each of these segments before moving to another.

The lion and the cross on the shield were painted freehand with black acrylic colour and afterwards treated with the oil colours ivory black and vandyke brown (Schmincke, “Mussini”). Light and shadow areas were painted in accordance to the underlying colour. Eventually mistakes were corrected using the underlying colours.

After the colour on the coat of arms and the shield had completely cured, several areas were dirtied and weathered by applying washes of diluted vandyke brown and natural burnt umber (Schmincke, “Mussini”).

Only after these washes had been applied some seams, tears and extreme highlights were emphasized with an equal mixture of royal blue deep and titanium opaque white.

Finally shield and fabric received some blood drops. These were carefully dabbed on with X-27 clear red (Tamiya).

All leather components were painted with the acrylic colours scorched brown, bestial brown, snakebite leather and bleached bone (Citadel). Afterwards they were treated with several washings of natural burnt umber and vandyke brown (Schmincke, “Mussini”).

Each of the yellow-metallic parts was painted with brazen brass, shining gold and chain mail (Citadel) over a black acrylic basecoat and than shaded with several layers of babad black (Citadel) and vandyke brown (Schmincke, “Mussini”).

Base:

The quite unspectacular base was built of structure paste, fine sand and some modelling bricks. Afterwards it was painted with acrylics before various Pigments from Andrea and Mig-Productions were applied. Everything was finished by painting some blood drops on the base.

An older figure which I painted in February 2009. The coat of arms is the one of my hometown "Lindau" it was first mentioned in 1180, so I thought it would fit.

Warrior Priest 2

Another Warrior Priest that stood on my desk for some months. It started as a medieval norman knight yet I changed the concept several times and finally found the time to finish it. I consider it not my very best work as it has been some kind of a "practice sculpt" over the last months rather than a planned miniature.

The miniature is 54mm tall and was sculpted with Milliput, Green Stuff and lead sheet. The design is based on Warhammer Fantasy Artworks.

Painted with acrylics. The chiped armour was realized with maskol. It was dabbed on a grey basecoat, afterwards the red colour was applied and the maskol was removed.

Painted with oil colours over an acrylic basecoat. The freehands and the leather parts were realized with acrylics. The face was painted with less deluted oil colours over an acrylic basecoat.

The tabard and the cloak were painted with oil colours over and acrylic basecoat. The freehands were painted with oil colours, too. For the leather parts I used acrylics only. The face was done in the same manner as the clothing exept for the oil colours which were less deluted. The blood was done with Tamiya´s X-27 clear red.
